10 Daily Healthy Habits to Look Younger

While there is no such thing as a topical facelift or magic anti-ageing cream, there are many daily habits that can help you look more youthful. Here, we’ll cover 10 of the best everyday habits that can help you look and feel younger.

Antioxidants like vitamins A and C fight against free radicals, helping you maintain a younger appearance.

10 Daily Healthy Habits to Look Younger

1. Nourish Your Skin From the Inside Out

One of the best daily habits for looking younger is paying attention to what you eat. Eating a variety of healthy foods fuels your body with the antioxidants, nutrients, phytochemicals and vitamins it needs to fight off oxidative stress and inflammation.

For instance, vitamins A and C help fight free radicals that can damage cells, Vitamin K can help reduce bruising, and lycopene helps fight against oxidation and the damaging effects of UV rays from the sun.

Here are some of the best anti-ageing foods to eat every day:

  • Avocado
  • Fatty fish (wild-caught salmon, sardines, anchovies, etc.)
  • Berries
  • Leafy greens
  • Red wine (in moderation) offers anthocyanins, resveratrol, and other powerful antioxidants
  • Bell peppers
  • Tomatoes
  • Pumpkin
  • Oranges
  • Nuts such as walnuts, almonds, and pistachios
  • Carrots
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Watermelon
  • Cucumber
  • Pomegranates
  • Bone broth
  • Broccoli
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Hemp seeds, sunflower seeds, flax seeds
  • Herbs and spices (turmeric, basil, rosemary, oregano, thyme, etc.)

2. Get Enough Sleep

They call it beauty rest for a reason! Getting enough sleep is a proven way to help replenish your skin and keep you looking and feeling more youthful.

A lack of sleep is proven to accelerate the ageing process. Too little sleep can decrease the skin’s ability to repair itself and contribute to the appearance of unevenness and fine lines. Aim to get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night. To further enhance your beauty sleep, use a satin pillowcase.

Beauty sleep is a real thing—your body needs the rest time

3. Drink More Green Tea

Coffee is the world’s most popular drink — but how much coffee is too much?

Although its high content of antioxidants may offer health benefits, coffee also contributes to dehydration.

If you like the ritual of something hot to drink in the morning or need a little caffeinated pick-me-up, consider switching from coffee to green tea or white tea.

Green tea offers sky-high levels of antioxidants that can help support healthy, youthful skin from the inside out. White tea contains beneficial enzymes that may help protect collagen and elastin — key support structures for the skin — from breaking down.

4. Drink Enough Water

Dehydration can impact the skin’s elasticity and leave it looking dull. To help keep your skin supple and resilient, it is important to drink enough water every day.

Although the amount of water you should drink every day varies depending on the individual, a general rule is to drink at least eight cups of water a day. Water-rich fruits such as watermelon and cucumbers are a great way to work toward your daily hydration intake. You can also liven up your water by adding a few frozen berries, cucumber slices, strawberry slices, mint leaves, or freshly squeezed lemon juice.

5. Wear Sunscreen Every Day

One of the easiest tips to look more youthful is to wear sunscreen every day — rain or shine. UV rays are proven to break down elastin, causing significant signs of ageing such as wrinkles, sagging, sun spots, and fine lines.

Even on cloudy or rainy days, UV rays still penetrate and can damage the skin. Wear a broad spectrum SPF 30 every day to help keep your skin protected and youthful.

SPF protects against free radical damage from the sun’s UV radiation that leads to collagen breakdown, sagging skin, and wrinkles.

6. Reduce Stress Levels

Chronic stress has been linked to a variety of health issues, and the effects of too much stress can also show up on your skin. While it is impossible to avoid stress completely, you can help manage your stress levels naturally by:

  • Practising meditation and deep breathing techniques
  • Exercising at least several times per week
  • Socialising with friends
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Journalling
  • Volunteering
  • Practising mindfulness

7. Get At Least Several Days of Exercise Each Week

We all know that exercise is a proven way to help maintain a healthy weight, promote lean muscle mass, and even fight stress. But did you know that exercising at least several days a week can also help you look more youthful?

Research shows that regular exercise is a powerful anti-ageing tool. Exercise transports oxygen and nutrients through the body, increases blood flow, and can even help prevent the skin from thinning. All of these factors add up to a younger-looking appearance, a healthier outlook, and a feeling younger in general.

A study showed that regular exercise can slow the aging process. You’ll fend off muscle loss and sleep better when you exercise most days of the week.

8. Make Sure Your Face Isn’t Your Only Focus

While it is important to use a gentle cleanser, sunscreen, a good moisturiser, and proven anti-ageing actives (retinoids, topical vitamin C, etc.) on your face, don’t forget other important areas! The chest, neck, and back of hands often get ignored, leaving these areas prone to showing signs of ageing.

Many facial products can also be used on the hands, chest, and neck to help keep these areas looking just as healthy as your face. The same goes for sunscreen — don’t just apply it to your face. Remember to apply sunscreen to your neck, chest, and the backs of your hands.

9. Reduce Your Sugar Intake

Sugar contributes to glycation, a process where excess glucose adheres to elastin and collagen proteins. This process forms advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). These AGEs cause collagen to become stiff and rigid, leading to sagging skin that looks dull and older.

Although glycation is a natural process that occurs with ageing, a high sugar diet accelerates the number of AGEs that get formed. If you are trying to figure out how to beat sugar cravings, try reaching for naturally sweet and healthy snacks such as berries, oranges, high-quality dark chocolate, or dates.

10. Limit Your Salt Intake

Along with limiting your intake of sugar, it’s also important to pay attention to how much salt you eat. Consuming too much salt can dehydrate the skin, making your skin look dull and causing fine lines and wrinkles to look more pronounced.

A healthy, youthful body needs healthy nutrients—and to avoid unhealthy ones.
